In 1981 the Wildlife Area was established by an agreement with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, offering 4,000 acres of public hunting and fishing opportunities. The wildlife area provides a steep, rocky shoreline, native grass prairie and woodlands, as well as shallow mudflats. Near the upper ends of the reservior there are three boat ramps, for easy access to the water.
